Question
At a certain temperature, KP for the dissociation of solid CaCO3 is 4.5 × 10–2 atm and for the reaction
C(s) + CO2(g) $\rightleftharpoons$2CO(g), the KP value is 2.0 atm. The pressure of carbon monoxide at this temperature, when solid carbon CaO and CaCO3 are mixed together and allowed to attain equilibrium is
Options
A.0.09 atm
B.0.30 atm
C.2.1 atm
D.0.47 atm
Solution
CaCO3(s)$\rightleftharpoons$ CaO(s) + CO2(g); Kp = 4.5 × 10–2 atm
C(s) + CO2(g) $\rightleftharpoons$2CO(g); Kp = 2.0 atm
On adding,
CaCO3(s) + C(s) $\rightleftharpoons$CaO(s) + 2CO(g);
Kp = 9 × 10–2 atm2
or PCO2 = 9 × 10–2 ⇒ PCO = 0.3 atm
