Question
Hydrogen cyanide, HCN, can be made by a twostep process. First, ammonia is reacted with O2 to give nitric oxide, NO. 4NH3(g) + 5O2(g) → 4NO(g) + 6H2O(g)
Then nitric oxide is reacted with methane, CH4.
2NO(g) + 2CH4(g) → 2HCN(g) + 2H2O(g) + H2(g).
When 25.5 g of ammonia and 32.0 g of methane are used, how many grams of hydrogen cyanide can be produced?
Options
A.1.5
B.2.0
C.40.5
D.54.0
Solution
4NH3 + 5O2 → 4NO + 6H2O
$\frac{25.5}{17}$= 1.5 mole 1.5 mole
2NO + 2CH4 → 2HCN + 2H2O
1.5 mole 2 mole 1.5 mole
L.R. = 1.5 × 27 = 40.5 g
