Question
One mole of mixture of N2, NO2 and N2O4 has a mean molar mass of 55.4 g. On heating to a temperature, at which all the N2O4 is dissociated into NO2, the mean molar mass tends to a lower value of 39.6 g. What is the mole ratio of N2, NO2 and N2O4 in the original mixture?
Options
A.5:1:4
B.1:1:1
C.1:4:5
D.1:5:4
Solution
Let N2 = a mole, NO2 = b mole and N2O4 = c mole.
a + b + c = 1 (1)
28 × a + 46 × b + 92 × c = 55.4 (2)
(a + b + 2c) × 39.6 = 55.4 (3)
Hence, a = 0.5, b = 0.1, c = 0.4
