Question

The empirical formula of an organic gaseous compound containing carbon and hydrogen is CH2. The volume occupied by certain mass of this gas is exactly half of the volume occupied by the same mass of nitrogen gas under identical conditions. The molecular formula of the organic gas is

Options

A.C2H4
B.CH2
C.C6H12
D.C4H8

Solution

$V_{gas} = \frac{1}{2} \times V_{nitrogen} \Rightarrow n_{gas} = \frac{1}{2} \times n_{nitrogen}$

$\Rightarrow \frac{w}{M_{gas}} = \frac{1}{2} \times \frac{w}{28} \Rightarrow M_{gas} = 56$

Now, 56 = 14 × n ⇒ n = 4

Hence, the molecular formula of compound = (CH2)4 = C4H8
