Question

A right angled prism of refractive index μ1 is placed in a rectangular block of refractive index μ2, whichis surrounded by a medium of refractive index μ3, as shown in the figure. A ray of light ′e′ entersthe rectangular block at normal incidence. Depending upon the relationships between μ1, μ2, and μ3,it takes one of the four possible paths ′ef′, ′eg′, ′eh′ or ′ei′.

Match the paths in List I with conditions of refractive indices in List II and select the correct answerusing the codes given below the lists :

Options

A.
B.
C.
D.

Solution

(P) at prism surface ray moving towards normal so (μ2 > μ1)
at block surface ray moving away from normal so (μ3 < μ2)
(Q) No deflection of ray on both surface so μ1 = μ2 = μ3
(R) At prism surface ray moving away from normal so μ2 < μ1.
At block surface ray moving away from normal so μ3 < μ2
but since no total internal reflection takes place on prism surface
            μ1 sin 45 < μ2 sin 90
            μ1 < μ2 √2
(S) Total internal reflection takes place so.
            μ1 sin 45 > μ2 sin 90
            μ1 > μ2 √2
