Question
A resonance in air column of length 20 cm resonates with a tuning fork of frequency 450 Hz. Ignoring end correction the velocity of sound in air is :
Options
A.1020 m/s
B.720 m/s
C.620 m/s
D.820 m/s
Solution
Let the air column be closed one. In closed organ pipe for fundamental node of vibration,
= 0.2 ⇒ λ = 0.8 m
v = nλ
If we take frequency of air column to be equal to tunning fork then,
v = 450 × 0.8 = 360m/ sec
If we take frequency of air column to be Twice that of tunning fork then,
v = 900 × 0.8 = 720m/ sec
This matches with alternative (b).
= 0.2 ⇒ λ = 0.8 mv = nλ
If we take frequency of air column to be equal to tunning fork then,
v = 450 × 0.8 = 360m/ sec
If we take frequency of air column to be Twice that of tunning fork then,
v = 900 × 0.8 = 720m/ sec
This matches with alternative (b).
