Question
Structure of a mixed oxide is cubic close-packed (c.c.p). The cubic unit cell of mixed oxide is composed of oxide ions. One fourth of the tetrahedral voids are occupied by divalent metal A and the octahedral voids are occupied by a mono valent metal B. The formula of the oxide is:
Options
A.AB2O2
B.ABO2
C.A2BO2
D.A2B3O4
Solution
O2- makes c.c.p.
So No. of O2- = 4
And (1/4)th of tetrahedral void = (1/4) × 8 = 2, occupied by A2+
And octahedral voids = 4, occupied by B+
So formula is A2B4O4 on AB2O2
So No. of O2- = 4
And (1/4)th of tetrahedral void = (1/4) × 8 = 2, occupied by A2+
And octahedral voids = 4, occupied by B+
So formula is A2B4O4 on AB2O2
