Breathing and Exchange of GasesHard
Question
Although much CO2 is carried in blood, yet blood does not become acidic, because
Options
A.it is absorbed by the leucocytes
B.blood buffers play an impprtant role in CO2 transport
C.it combines with water to form H2CO3 which is neutralized by Na2CO3
D.it is conrinuously diffused through tissues and is not allowed to accumulate
Solution
Buffer of the blood is sodium bicarbonate. During CO2 transportation, carbonic acid dissociates into H+ and HCO3- (bicarbonate ions). This bicarbonate combines with sodium forming sodium bicarbonate. Thus concentration of carbonic acid does not inerease in blood due to presence of sodium, and thus blood does not become acidic. About 70% of CO2 released during cellular respiration is transported by blood in the form of sodium bicarbonate in plasma.
