Ocean is the largest ecosystem and phytoplankton (algae) of oceans are the greatest produc ers of orgnic matter. Accorducers of an estimate, about 70-80 billion tonne CO2 is fixed annually by terrestrial and aquatic photoautotrophs. It produces over 170 billion ton of dry organic matter. Out of these only 10% (17 billion tonne) of dry matter is produced by land plants while 90% of its is formed in oceans.
