Question

During anaeobic digestion of organic waste, such as in producing biogas, which one of the following is left undergraded ?

Options

A.Hemicellulose
B.Lipids
C.Cellulose
D.Lignin

Solution

During biogas formation, digestion of cellulose is low (rate-limiting) and most of the lignin is not decomposed. After cellulose lignins is the most abundant plants polymer. It forms 20 to 30 % of the wood of the tree. Ligninis a complex polymeric molecules, made up of phenyl propanoid units. Cellulose is a large chained polymer of glucose moleculeswhich are linked with each other by glycosidic bonds. Hemicellulose are branched polymers of glucose, xylose, galctose, mannose and arabinose.
