Organic nutrients absorbed through roots reaches the shoot apex and other parts through phloem cells. Moreover, nutrients are also translocated downwardly through phloen as demonstrated by girdling experiment (Malpighi; 1671) in which removal of rinfg of bark (including phloem) prevents downward translocation of food and causing starvation and death of roots.
