Poisons released from Corynebacterium diphtheriae cause diphtheria. Actually, bacterial cells do not contain gene for toxin production - a phage carries the gene for it. Only those lysogenised cell of C. diphtheriae which carry β phage, can produce the toxin and cause diphtheria.
