Question
The main organelle involved in modification and routing of newly synthesized proteins to their destinations is
Options
A.chloroplast
B.mitochondria
C.lysosome
D.endoplasmic reticulum
Solution
Pprter coined the name Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER). It is a network of tubules, vesicles and cisternae withi an eukaryotic cell (absent in prokaryotic cells). Two types of ER are recognisrd on the basis of presence/absence of ribosomes on the wall of the ER.
(a) Smopth ER : Wall of this ER does ribosomes. Smooth ER helps in thr synthesis of lipid and glycogen.
(b) Rough ER : Wall of this ER contains ribosomes. Rough ER is involved in protein synthesis and transfer.
protein synthesis taken place in ribosomes attached on wall of ER. Newly formed protien enters within the cavity of rough ER and follows following path
Protein → cavity of rough ER → cavity of somooth ER → Guolgi membrane → lysosomes or transport vesicles or secretory geanules.
