Lysosomes were discovered by Christian de DuVe (1955) from rat liver. Matile (1964) discovered lysosomes in plants. Generally lysosomes are 0.2 - 0.8 in in size, irregular mem branous vesicles filled with hydrolytic rnzymes. They are polymorphic. About 40 enzymes (all hydrolytic) are present in lysosomes. These include proteases, nucleases, glycosidases, lipases, phospholipases, phosphatases and sulphatases.
