Question

According to fluid mosaic model, plasma membrane is composed of

Options

A.phospholipids and oligosaccharides
B.phospholipids and hemicellulose
C.phospholipids and integral proteins
D.phospholipids, extrinic proteins and intrinsic proteins

Solution

Fluid mosaic model of plasma membrane, proposed by S J Singer and G L Nicolson is the most accepted model . They described this model as protein icebergs in a sea of lipids there is bilipid layer composed of phospholipids with their polar hydrophilic rnds on the outer surfaces and two non-polar hydrophobic tails of each phospholipid molecule point inwards. The globular alpha proteins do not form continuous layer but are embedded irregularly in the lipid biliayer (called integral or intrinsic proteins) or superficially attached (extrinsic or peripheral proteins).
