Question
In YDSE, both slits are covered by transparent slabs. Upper slits is covered by slab of μ = 1.5 and thickness t and lower is covered by μ = 4/3 and thickness 2t, then central maxima

Options
A.Shifts in +ve y axis direction
B.Shifts in -ve y axis direction
C.Remains at same position
D.May shift in upward or downward depending upon wavelength of light
Solution
ᐃx = t(μ - 1)
ᐃx1 = t(1.5 - 1) = 0.5t
ᐃx2 = 2t(4/3 - 1) = 2t × 1/3 = t/3 = 0.33t
ᐃx1 > ᐃx2
Shifts in + y axis direction
ᐃx1 = t(1.5 - 1) = 0.5t
ᐃx2 = 2t(4/3 - 1) = 2t × 1/3 = t/3 = 0.33t
ᐃx1 > ᐃx2
Shifts in + y axis direction
