Question
A candle of diameter d is floating on a liquid in a cylindrical container of diameter D (D > > d) as shown in figure. If it is burning at the rate of 2cm/hour then the top of the candle will : -

Options
A.Remain at the same height
B.Fall at the rate of 1cm/hour
C.Fall at the rate of 2cm/hour
D.go up the rate of 1cm/hour
Solution
First hint: Mid point of the candle will remain balance at the surface of water.Assuming melted wax detached from the candle.
Approach:- As from shown figure we can observe:
Mg(mass of candle) = ρwater .g.L.A (A = area of cross section)
ρwater = 2.ρWAX
Thus the candle will come out of water with 1cm/hr as 2cm/hr is burning
∴ Top of candle will reduce = burning rate - uplifting rate
1cm/hr
