Question
Two identical straight wire are stretched so as to produce 6 beats/s when vibrating simul-taneously. On changing the tension slightly in one of them, the beat frequency remains unchanged. Denoting by T1, T2 the higher and the lower initial tension in the strings, then it could be said that while making the above change in tension
Options
A.T2 was dcreases
B.T2 was increased
C.T1 was decreased
D.T1 was increased
Solution
T1 > T2
∴ v1 > v2
or f1 > f2
and f1 - f2 = 6Hz
Now, if T1 is increased, f1 will increase or f1 - f2 will increase. Therefore, (d) is wrong. If T1 is decrease, f1 will decrease and it may be possible that now f1 - f2 becomes 6 Hz. Therefore (c) option is correct.
Similarly, when T1 is increased, f1 will increase and again f1 - f2 become 6 Hz. So (b) is also correct. But (a) is wrong.
∴ v1 > v2
or f1 > f2
and f1 - f2 = 6Hz
Now, if T1 is increased, f1 will increase or f1 - f2 will increase. Therefore, (d) is wrong. If T1 is decrease, f1 will decrease and it may be possible that now f1 - f2 becomes 6 Hz. Therefore (c) option is correct.
