Question
A gas ′X′ is passed through water to form a saturated solution. The aqueous solution on treatment with silver nitrate gives a white precipitate. The saturated aqueous solution also dissolves magnesium ribbon with evolution of a colourless gas ′Y′ Identif ′X′ and ′Y′
Options
A.X = CO2, Y = Cl2
B.X = Cl2, Y = CO2
C.X = Cl2, Y = H2
D.X = H2, Y = Cl2
Solution
Cl2 give saturated solution eith water in which it disproportionates.
Cl2 + H2O ⇋ HCl + HOCl
(X)
On adding AgNO3, a white ppt. of AgCl is obtained.
AgNO3 + HCl → AgCl ↓ + HNO3
Because saturated aqueous solution contains HCl. so it liberates H2 with Mg ribbon.
Mg + 2HCl → MgCl2 + H2 ↑
(Y)
Cl2 + H2O ⇋ HCl + HOCl
