Question
Which of the following solutions give white precipitate with Pb(NO3)2 as well as with Ba(NO3)2 ?
Options
A.Sodium chloride
B.Sodium sulphate
C.Disodium hydrogen phosphite
D.Sodium chromate
Solution
(A) Pb(NO3)2 + 2NaCl → PbCl2 ↓ (white) + 2NaNO3
Ba(NO3)2 + 2NaCl → BaCl2 + 2NaNO3 ; BaCl2 is soluble in water
(B) Na2SO4 gives white precipitate of PbSO4 and BaSO4 with Pb(NO3)2 and Ba(NO3)2 respectively.
(C) Disodium hydrogen phosphite gives white precipitate with both salts.
HPO32- + Ba2+ → BaHPO3 ↓ (white) ; HPO32 + Pb2+ → PbHPO3↓ (white)
(D) Pb2+ + CrO42- → PbCrO4 ↓ (yellow) ; Ba2+ + CrO42- → BaCrO4 ↑ (yellow)
