Question
Select correct statement(s) :
Options
A.Li2CO3 is only sparingly soluble in water and no LiHCO3 has been isolated.
B.K2CO3 cannot be made by a method similar to the ammonia - soda (Solvay) process.
C.Li2CO3 and MgCO3 both are thermally stable.
D.Na2CO3 . NaHCO3. 2H2O is a mineral called trona.
Solution
(A) The solubility of the alkali metal carbonates increases down the group from Li to Cs. This is because of the fact that down the group with increasing size of cation the lattice energy as well as hydration energy also decrease but the change in lattice energy is more as compare to that of hydration energy. Lithium hydrogencarbonate is not obtained in the solid form while all other elements form solid hydrogencarbonates.
(B) K2CO3 can not be prepared by Solvey process because intermediate formed, KHCO3 is appreciably soluble in water.
(C) Li2CO3 and MgCO3 both are not thermally stable.
(D) Na2CO3.NaHCO3.2H2O is a mineral called trona.
