Question
Some of the characteristics of Bt cotton are
Options
A.log fiber and resistance to aphids
B.medium yield, log fiber and resistance to beetle pests
C.high yiels and production of toxic protein crystal which kill dipteran
D.high yiels and restance to bollowrms
Solution
Bacillus thringiensis forms crystals containing a toxic insecticidal protien. Bt toxin protien exists as inactive protien but once an insect ingests the inactive toxin, it is converted into an acive form of toxin dur to the alkaline pH of gut, which solubulise the crystals. the activated toxin binds to the surface of midgut epithelial cell and creats pores that causes cell swellingand lysis and eventually cause death of the insect. Specific Bt toxin genes were isolated from B.thuringiensis and incorpotated into the sevral plants such as cotton. The toxin is coded by a gene named cry. There are a number of them, eg, the proteins encoded by the gene cry IAc and cry IIAb control the cotton bollworms, that of cry IAb control corn borers.
