Photosynthesis in Higher PlantsHard
Question
C4 - plants are more efficient in photosynthesis than C3 - plants due to -
Options
A.higher leaf area
B.presence of larger number of chloroplants
C.presence of thin cuticle
D.lower rate of photorespiration
Solution
C4-plants are more efficient in photosynthesis than C3-plants but use more energy. They posses the larger number of chloroplasts in the leaf cells. In the leaves of C4-plants the vascular bundles are surrounded by bundle sheath of larger parenchymatous cells, which in turn are surrounded by mesophyll cells. Chloroplast in buldle sheath cells are larger and always contains grana whereas chloroplasts in mesophyll cells are smaller.
