Question
How many litres of water must be added to 1litre of an aqueous solution of HCl with a pH of 1 litre to create an aqueous solution with pH of 2 ?
Options
A.0.1 L
B.0.9 L
C.2.0 L
D.9.0 L
Solution
(pH)1 = 1 ⇒ (H+)1 = 10-1 M
(pH)2 = 2 ⇒ (H+)2 = 10-2 M
from dilution law.
M1V1 = M2V2
10-1 × 1 = 10-2 × V2
V2 = 10 litre
∴ Added water = 10 - 1 = 9 litre
(pH)2 = 2 ⇒ (H+)2 = 10-2 M
from dilution law.
M1V1 = M2V2
10-1 × 1 = 10-2 × V2
V2 = 10 litre
∴ Added water = 10 - 1 = 9 litre
