KVPY Preparation Guide 2026: Scholarship, Streams, and Strategy
KVPY (Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana) is a prestigious scholarship program by DST, Government of India, for students pursuing basic sciences. KVPY fellows receive generous stipends and direct admission to IISc and IISERs.
KVPY Streams and Eligibility
SA Stream: Class 11 students pursuing Science. SB Stream: Class 12 students in Science. SX Stream: 1st year B.Sc./BS/B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./MS students. Eligibility: SA requires 60% aggregate in Class 10 (50% for SC/ST/PWD). Selection: Written aptitude test + Interview for SA and SX.
KVPY Scholarship Benefits
SA/SX/SB fellows receive monthly stipend: ₹5,000 during Class 11-12, ₹7,000 during B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math. Annual contingency grant: ₹20,000 during Class 11-12, ₹28,000 during undergraduate. Total fellowship value over 5 years: ~₹5-6 lakhs. Plus: KVPY fellows can take direct admission to IISc Basic Sciences, IISERs, and NISER without JEE.
KVPY SA Exam Pattern
Part 1 (One-mark): Physics (15 Qs), Chemistry (15 Qs), Mathematics (15 Qs), Biology (15 Qs) — 4 subjects. Part 2 (Two-mark): Same 4 subjects, 5 Qs each. Total: 80 marks in Part 1 + 40 marks in Part 2 = 120 marks. Negative marking: -0.25 for Part 1, -0.5 for Part 2.
Preparation Strategy
KVPY SA level is similar to NSEP/NSEC — above JEE Main but below JEE Advanced. NCERT is the base; go 20-30% deeper in all 4 subjects. Biology is required (unlike JEE) — NCERT Class 11-12 Biology covers KVPY Biology well. Past KVPY papers (available on KVPY official site) are the best preparation resource.
KVPY Interview Stage
Top ~5000 qualify for interview from each stream. Interview tests: depth in your chosen specialization, reasoning ability, scientific curiosity. Questions are unconventional: "Why is the sky blue?" "Estimate the number of molecules in a breath." Practice thinking out loud and defending your reasoning.
