JEE Advanced Exam Pattern 2026: Paper 1 & 2 Structure and Marking Scheme

jee advanced

JEE Advanced has a more complex pattern than JEE Main, with multiple question types in each paper. Understanding the exact pattern — especially the marking scheme — is critical for strategy.

Overall Structure

2 papers: Paper 1 and Paper 2. Both papers are 3 hours each. Both must be attempted. Both have Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics sections. Total marks: 360 (180 per paper). Papers are computer-based (CBT).

Question Types in JEE Advanced

Single Correct MCQ (SCQ): +3/-1. Multiple Correct MCQ (MCQ): +4/-2 for all correct, +1 for partial (selecting some but not all correct), -2 for wrong. Numerical Answer Type (NAT): +3/0. Matching Type: varies by year. Matrix Match: typically +8 for full, partial credit possible.

The Partial Marking Trap

MCQ with multiple correct answers: you score +1 only if you select a correct subset without any wrong answer. If you select any incorrect option, you get -2 regardless of how many correct options you selected. Strategy: only mark an option if you are fully certain it is correct.

Paper 1 vs Paper 2 Differences

Both papers have the same subjects but different question type distributions each year. Typically: Paper 1 has more single correct MCQs, Paper 2 has more comprehension and matching type questions. The exact distribution changes year to year.

Attempt Strategy

In JEE Advanced, attempting fewer questions correctly beats attempting many with mistakes. Target: 60-70% attempt rate with high accuracy. For MCQ multiple correct: mark only options you are fully sure about. For NAT: always attempt — no negative marking.
